Research interests

  • Bacterial evolution, ecology and genetics, plant-bacteria interactions, soil microbiology.

Current research

Bacteria play crucial roles in diverse ecosystems, ranging from human health to soil function.
My group uses a range of techniques, including bacterial genetics, genomics, evolution experiments, microbiological techniques and plant experiments, to characterize bacterial interactions within microbiomes and with symbiotic organisms, so that we can harness naturally beneficial interactions.

In soils, bacteria cycle and capture nutrients to make them bioavailable for plants and other organisms, so are an essential component of soil health and plant productivity. Our current work is focused on understanding how beneficial bacteria support plant growth, using Azospirillum spp. as a model system.
