History of medicine talk: Modern medicine and international aid
Modern medicine and international aid: Khunde Hospital, Nepal, 1966–2026
Presenter: Associate Professor Susan Heydon
Established by Sir Edmund Hillary and staffed initially with volunteer medical graduates – many from Otago – this small hospital quickly became the main provider of ‘modern’ healthcare and medicines in the remote Mt Everest region.
Set against a background of economic and social change, in December 2026 Khunde Hospital will reach 60 years of working with the local people.
