A question of balance: How cells manage stress, ageing and disease
About Professor Elizabeth Ledgerwood's research
Liz completed her PhD at the University of Otago, then spent time at the University of Cambridge before returning to Otago, where she has spent her career in the Department of Biochemistry. Liz's research explores how our cells maintain balance by managing the reactive molecules generated during normal metabolism to keep us healthy, and aims to understand what happens when that balance breaks down.
Starting from fundamental biochemistry, Liz’s work extends into human health, including discovering new genetic causes of low platelets, and working with the long-running Dunedin Study to link changes in redox and mitochondrial function to the biology of ageing. This research has been supported by the Health Research Council, The Marsden Fund and many other sources.
Liz is currently Deputy Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Associate Dean Academic in the Faculty of Biomedical Sciences, and a member of Mātai Hāora – Centre for Redox Biology and Medicine.
This lecture will be followed with light refreshments, tea, coffee and juice.
