What happens when we translate material from languages whose cultural contexts differ significantly from our own? How do these issues affect tasks of translation in a larger sense as artistic and scholarly outputs?

In this workshop, Associate Professor Stephen Epstein will draw on decades of experience as a translator of Korean and Indonesian fiction to illuminate how literary translation from these languages requires attention to considerations that go well beyond the linguistic.

Aside from discussing special features of translating between English and Asian languages, he will help us shape translation as a productive zone of intellectual activity in the Humanities.
