Dysautonomia is increasingly recognised across a wide range of health conditions, yet many clinicians and students remain unfamiliar with its presentation and management.

In this presentation, Dr Gerard Farrell explores the question: What is dysautonomia? He will discuss how his PhD research sparked an interest in the autonomic nervous system, led to the establishment of a dedicated dysautonomia service, and continues to inform his current research programme. Through a combination of clinical anecdotes and research insights, the session will provide an introduction to dysautonomia and highlight emerging opportunities for assessment, management, and future research.

Dr Gerard Farrell is an early career researcher, Lecturer, and Physiotherapy Clinician in the School of Physiotherapy at the University of Otago, having joined the academic staff in late 2025. He completed his PhD in 2023 and continues to maintain an active clinical practice through a dedicated dysautonomia service at the School of Physiotherapy Clinics. His work spans research, teaching, and clinical care, with a focus on autonomic and musculoskeletal system.
