Friday (22 August) was a significant day for the relationship between Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka - the University of Otago and mana whenua.

A Mana-to-Mana Agreement – Te Kaha Uia Te Kaha – was signed between the University and Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki and Te Rūnanga o Moeraki this afternoon.

The agreement acknowledges the three rūnaka – known collectively for the purposes of this Agreement as Kā Rūnaka – as primary Te Tiriti o Waitangi partners. The formal foundations for this partnership lie in the Memorandum of Understanding between Te Rūnanga o Ngāi Tahu and the University, initially signed in 2013.

The partnership was signed by University Chancellor Trish Oakley, as well as the Chairs of Te Rūnanga o Ōtākou, Nadia Wesley-Smith; Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki, Matapura Ellison; and Te Rūnanga o Moeraki, Justin Tipa.

By signing the Agreement, the University is affirming its commitment to further deepening and strengthening its relationship with Kā Rūnaka.

The Chancellor says the University and Kā Rūnaka come together united in their accountability to the future and to mark an enduring partnership.

“This is not a partnership that is designed for immediate gain. Instead, it marks our solid foundation of shared values, a common vision, and our commitment to the development of a Te Tiriti-led University,” Ms Oakley says.

“The Mana-to-Mana Agreement is about building for longevity. We are building for the generations to come, leaving a legacy that empowers them to achieve greater things still.”

Nadia Wesley-Smith agrees.

“This Agreement sets a clear expectation that engagement will occur at the highest level – a true Mana-to-Mana partnership. It will provide intergenerational opportunities for our people to succeed and flourish while at Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka – and beyond.

“This Agreement is a positive and solid foundation to ensure that aspiration becomes a reality.”

Matapura Ellison says the signing of the Agreement is an important milestone for all the partners.

“The goals and aspirations of Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka and mana whenua are not mutually exclusive – they enable and enhance each other. This Agreement is a mana-enhancing, equitable, and empowering engagement that will advance the strategic imperatives of all parties.”

Justin Tipa says today’s signing is an important milestone for mana whenua and the University.

“I am pleased with what this signifies for all parties and look forward to seeing what we can achieve together.”
