A woman holds a book.

Doctor, writer, speaker, mentor, and Otago Medical School alumna, Dr Lucy O’Hagan, at the Faculty of Medicine – Wellington this month.

A one-woman performance by general practitioner and Otago alumna Dr Lucy O’Hagan at the Faculty of Medicine – Wellington this month gave University and hospital staff, medical school students and alumni an inside look at a busy morning in general practice.

The show has been taken on the road by Lucy to promote her memoir, Everything but the medicine: A doctor’s tale, in which she talks about her upbringing, her time at medical school, and her more than 30 years of working as a rata hauora/general practitioner.

During the performance, Lucy acts out an imagined morning in a general practice, playing the roles of 32 characters, both doctors and patients, allowing her to explore the profound but often complex relationships between the two.

The show was organised by Dr Emily Cavana, a GP and Senior Lecturer in the Department of Primary Health Care, Wellington.

She says while the show, Inside the GP Consultation, has laugh-out-loud moments, it deals with serious themes, which give the audience plenty to reflect on.

“It really is essential viewing for all future doctors, not just future GPs.”

The event, in the Nordmeyer Theatre on 8 May, was followed by a book signing for Lucy’s memoir, which was longlisted for the 2026 Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.

Lucy graduated from Otago with an MB ChB in 1988 and a Postgraduate Diploma in General Practice in 2007.
