Experienced director and general practitioner, Dr Doug Hill, has been appointed to the University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka Council.
Owner of Broadway Medical Centre in Dunedin, Dr Hill is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Directors, and chairs insurance and financial services provider, MAS. He is the previous chair of both WellSouth Primary Health Network and the Columba College Board of Governors.

He has a track record of leading innovative solutions to complex problems across health, education and financial services.
“In each of the roles I’ve held, I’ve seen how much education changes what’s possible for people, from patients to students to professionals early in their careers.
“Otago has been a place of many firsts for myself and my own family, and I am looking forward to helping ensure the University continues to create those opportunities for others,” he says.
Chancellor Trish Oakley says the addition of Dr Hill continues the University Council’s commitment to bringing experienced governors to the table, strengthening its collective capability.
“A lifelong learner, Doug has demonstrated commitment to continuing professional governance development and understands the important stewardship role of Council as we continue to progress our ambitions within Pae Tata and Vision 2040,” she says.
Dr Hill will replace Brendan Boyle from November 1.
Ms Oakley acknowledges the significant contribution Mr Boyle has made since he joined the Council in 2022, particularly during his role as Pro-Chancellor which he has held since October 2024.
The Council will appoint a new Pro-Chancellor at a later date.
