Four first year Otago music students have received a dream opportunity to spend their second year at University as SIX60 scholarship recipients.
Established in 2021 by the University of Otago – Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka and SIX60, one of New Zealand’s most successful bands, the scholarships include a $10,000 rent rebate, as well as mentoring from the band and access to the University’s recording studios.
Successful 2026 recipients Gus Falwasser-Logan, Siena Hannay, Oliver Lodge and Charlie Brough will live together in SIX60’s iconic Castle Street property that the band purchased in 2021.
Gus decided to apply for the scholarship as soon as he heard about it in Year 13.
“I knew that this was an amazing opportunity that would allow me to maximise my potential here at Otago as a music student,” he says.
Finding out he’d actually received a coveted spot in the flat “somewhat overwhelmed” him with emotion, he says.
“Of course, excitement, joy, and pride come to mind, but the primary emotion would be ecstatic.”
He aims to become fluent in multiple areas of music during his time at Otago, primarily songwriting (rhythm, harmony, melody), singing and instrumentation.
“The SIX60 scholarship means that I will be able to continue in my journey in a flat with minimum expenses, a music room, flatmates that have complementary goals, and that legendary Dunedin history.
“Additionally, the opportunity to record in the Tui studio will allow me to release music to a professional standard, hopefully giving me a kickstart in my catalogue.
“And of course, having the SIX60 crew as mentors will provide me with invaluable insights into the music industry.”

Siena says she was “honestly shocked” when she got the news she’d received a scholarship.
“This opportunity gives me more time and freedom to work on my music, so it really means a lot to me,” she says.
Oliver says he heard “really good things” about the scholarship from school friends who had received it previously.
“I thought this would be an excellent way to make connections, improve my skills and work with others who share my passion for music.”
For Charlie, the chance to live in a well-known piece of music history captured his interest.
“I’m very excited, and grateful to the people who supported me along the way,” he says.
“I’d like to create networks within the musician community and establish lifelong friendships.”
He hopes to go into music teaching to make a difference in the younger music community, he says.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) Professor Jessica Palmer says it was fantastic to have another strong pool of candidates this year.
“I’d like to congratulate these talented tauira on receiving their well-deserved scholarships, and I’ll be watching their careers with interest.”
