Background including creative and research interests

Peter is a respected conductor, especially recognized for his work with young people in youth orchestras, summer schools, The NZ Secondary Schools Symphony Orchestra and the NZ National Youth Brass Band. He has also made many professional appearances in Dunedin conducting the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra and St Kilda Brass. For ten years he was musical director of the City Choir Dunedin. Peter is a leading figure in the NZ brass band scene and as well as conducting, he regularly adjudicates at brass band contests and festivals. As a composer, performances of his works can be found on CDs, YouTube and Vimeo, and several works have had score and parts published.

A few recent compositions:

  1. Look to the Far Horizon for string quartet was written for the Jade string quartet, and first performed in one of their Pah Gallery, Auckland subscription series concerts in 2017. The music attempts to capture some of the atmosphere and character of the skies and seascapes surrounding his home city of Dunedin, and the nearby Otago peninsula.

  2. Huriawa, Prelude and variations for orchestra (2011) evokes some of the atmosphere and character of the Huriawa pa on the Karitane peninsula and its landscape, its violent history and its stories. Fragments of Wagnerian yearning romantic music appear from time to time to remind of the human tragedy. The work is a series of variations on material derived from the step progression of Wagner ‘s Tristan prelude. It was first performed in 2019 by the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra conducted by Tecwyn Evans.

  3. String quartet 2 Proclamation, Canons and Dances (2019) was commissioned by the Jade Quartet and is based around the idea of recontextualising a Haydn quartet into twenty-first century Aotearoa. It has been given numerous performances by the Jade, including on their 2021 North Island tour for Chamber Music NZ.
