Martyn has been prolifically creating Award-winning light and set design for such diverse productions as Death of a Salesman, Copenhagen and The Cherry Orchard at Circa Theatre, Albert Speer and Yours Truly at BATS Theatre, to dance works When Love comes Calling, White and Finder's Keepers for Raewyn Hill as well as Ink and in 2016 Who Are We Now? with Maria Dabrowska and Footnote Dance. Ink toured in 2007 to the Tauranga Festival and Melbourne in 2008 as part of a collection of NZ dance programme at The Dancehouse. He created the award winning light design for the stage spectacular Maui - one man against the Gods for Tanemauta Gray. Nominated 12 times at the prestigious Chapman Tripp Awards for his work, Martyn has built a reputation for innovative and exciting design. His Festival designs include Dr Buller’s Birds for the 2006 Festival of the Arts and Dark Tourists for AK07. Martyn is a co-creator of the acclaimed Hotel site-specific production, which scooped the 2007 Fringe Awards in Wellington, and has played at the numerous Festivals around NZ.

He has designed for Fortune Theatre in Dunedin on numerous occasions including The Caretaker, Red, Tribes, Punk Rock and Grounded. For Opera Otago he designed set and lights for Larnarch, This Other Eden and A Christmas Carol.
In recent years he has created afterburner, a light and sound collective through which he develops installation pieces like Man on the Moon and The Telescope, which toured in 2004 to three centres, Fog and Mirrors, an urban light project which was awarded the Visual Art Awards at the 2005 Fringe Festival, and recently Dark Matter which received best Design and Multimedia awards.

  • Martyn has created light designs all over New Zealand, as well as Sydney, Brisbane, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He has exhibited his light installations at the Wellington City Gallery and at the Prague Quadrennial in 2004. He was commissioned to create a light installation for the Macs Brewery on Wellington's waterfront, which was installed in 2007.
