Climate Health Aotearoa (CHA) is a Tiriti-based national interdisciplinary research centre. This scholarship is designed to help develop and apply skills in a research Masters programme that contributes understanding on oranga taiao/hauora tangata (healthy environments/healthy people), with a focus on climate change and health.

The scholarship is funded by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR). It will provide one year of research Masters funding for a full-time Māori student enrolled at Te Whare Wānanga o Ōtākou (University of Otago).

The successful applicant will have the opportunity to join the CHAtangata whenua caucus and develop relationships with leading kaupapa Māori climate change and health researchers. In addition, the scholarship includes travel funding to spend time at ESR learning about the Institute and developing relationships with research staff.


Applications are open to students who:

  • Whakapapa Māori and/or have Indigenous Pacific ancestry; and
  • Are eligible to enrol as a domestic student in a postgraduate qualification that places human health within healthy ecosystems, at one of CHA’s partner Universities in Aotearoa; and
  • Intend to enrol full-time in 2024


The value of the scholarship is $35,000, including tuition fees and a stipend.
