Linking personality with brain structure and function

Overview

We have collected personality-related data from ~650 individuals as part of multiple large-scale studies within our research group, which are analysed from free text using an established machine learning model to generate simple scores of different personality dimensions. These personality measures can be compared to multiple mental health metrics that were also collected in these individuals. In 100 participants we also have MRI scans that have measured brain structure (e.g. diffusion and structural MRI) and function (resting state fMRI), such that we can investigate brain signatures of these personality traits.

This project could be tailored to suit someone with a background in computer science, psychology, neuroscience or a related field. We look forward to hearing from anyone who may be interested in this area of research.

Note: While project funding is provided, this opportunity does not cover postgraduate scholarship funding. If prospective students are interested in applying for a central University of Otago PhD scholarship, an A+ (preferable) or A equivalent GPA is required, with evidence of research publications preferred – please contact the Graduate Research School at Otago for grade conversions. These scholarships are highly competitive and not guaranteed.
