Information
Established in 2016 in conjunction with the China Scholarship Council, this scholarship provides a tuition fee waiver for up to 4 years, for full-time PhD study and a supplementary stipend to ensure that each China Scholarship Council doctoral scholarship student receives the stipend equivalent in value to that received by recipients of a standard University of Otago Doctoral Scholarship. This scholarship is open to PhD candidates supported by the China Scholarship Council.
Applicants must:
- Meet the eligibility standards set by the China Scholarship Council to apply for and receive one of its scholarships awarded specifically under their joint scheme with Otago. Awards made by the China Scholarship Council outside its joint scheme with Otago are not subject to reciprocal funding support by Otago. - Have conditional admission into the PhD programme at the University of Otago.
2026 nomination process:
- By the end of February 2026 prospective applicants must have conditional admission into the PhD programme at the University of Otago
- Prospective applicants should contact the Manager, Postgraduate Scholarships and the Manager, Graduate Research School requesting nomination letters to support application to the CSC.
- Requests for nomination will be reviewed in the first week of March 2026.
- Up to 5 students will be accepted for nomination.
- Nominated students will receive letters advising agreement to tuition fee waiver and admission to the PhD programme.
- Nominated students will supply these letters to the CSC as part of its application process
- Should the CSC subsequently award a scholarship to an applicant, Otago will offer reciprocal funding. No student scholarship application in eVision is necessary.
