The two seats were presented by the Rowheath Trust to commemorate Sir Carl Victor Smith and his wife, Catherine Lady Smith.
Sir Carl (1918–1979), a prominent Dunedin businessman and University benefactor, was a member of the University Council from 1945 to 1967.
