A native of California, Amanda Barusch completed her BA in Psychology at Reed College and her MSW and PhD in Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley. Her primary research and teaching interests are in the field of gerontology, where she has investigated a range of topics, from interpersonal relations to international policy comparisons. She has published articles in leading North American social work and gerontology journals, and is the author or coauthor of six books. Her latest book, Love Stories of Later Life was released by Oxford University Press in 2008. She serves on the editorial boards of two professional journals: Journal of Poverty and Health and Social Work.
Professor Barusch joined the University of Otago staff in July 2007 following 22 years as a member of the faculty at the University of Utah, College of Social Work. There she served as Associate Dean for Research and Doctoral Studies (2003-2007) and Director of the Social Research Institute (1995-1998). She is a devoted member of the Association for Gerontology Education – Social Work and a fellow in the Gerontological Society of America. In 2009 she was appointed Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Gerontological Social Work.
