The University

Halifax Founded in 1818, Dalhousie University is one of Canada's oldest universities, attracting more than 19,000 students from around the world. Dalhousie has three campuses in Halifax—all within walking distance to the downtown core. A leading, research-intensive university, Dalhousie combines a tradition of excellence with the hospitality of Canada's beautiful east coast. Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada is a modern port city teeming with culture and heritage.

With a population of over 400,000 people, Halifax is the capital city of Nova Scotia and the educational, cultural and economic hub of Atlantic Canada. Often referred to as Canada's “best-kept secret,” Halifax boasts a youthful spirit, rich history and scenic waterfront.

Exchange Information

  • Undergraduate level exchange only.
  • Academic Year: September - April (Fall Term: September - December; Winter Term: January - April).
  • Minimum course load - 3 courses per semester or 1.5 credits/9 credit hours; maximum course load - 5 courses per semester or 2.5 credits/15 credit hours. Each semester course is worth 0.5 a credit or 3 credit hours.
  • Dalhousie course levels: 1000 level - introductory; 2000, 3000, 4000 level - advanced; 5000/6000 level - graduate courses.
  • Faculty of Dentistry, Law, Medicine, Planning, and most programs/courses in the Faculty of Health are all restricted from exchange students.
