A groundbreaking PhD project for an Indonesian student funded by the Gates Foundation and Wellcome Trust

Overview

Despite major progress in TB control, the question of the extent to which people with asymptomatic TB can transmit the disease remains unanswered – a knowledge gap that could redefine TB prevention worldwide. This PhD project will explore this critical question through cutting-edge epidemiological and laboratory-based research, with flexibility to tailor your focus based on your expertise and interests.

Scholarship benefits

  • Generous tax-free stipend of NZD $33,000–$50,000 per year (based on circumstances)
  • Funding for project costs, international travel, and conference participation
  • International supervision and collaboration with renowned researchers in New Zealand, Indonesia, Europe, and South Africa
  • Minimum 12 months at the University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand
  • Up to 24 months based at the RC3ID research centre at Universitas Padjadjaran, Bandung – a hub for global TB research excellence

Who should apply

We are seeking a highly motivated Indonesian national who:

  • Holds a Master’s degree in public health, medicine, microbiology, epidemiology, or a related health discipline
  • Has demonstrated academic excellence and research potential
  • Is committed to contributing to global infectious disease research
  • Has strong communication skills and the ability to work across cultures and disciplines
