These scholarships will be awarded to a boy and a girl graduating from Southland Boys' High School and Southland Girls' High School who intend to pursue degrees and careers in science. They will reward talented musicians and emerging scientists who also demonstrate leadership and commitment to community, peers and family.

Elman was a son of the late Philip Poole, who was part of the early settler Poole family from England and a well-known cabinetmaker and musician in Invercargill in the 1920s. Elman studied at Southland Boys' High School and the University of Otago, from which he graduated with a degree in Medicine in 1944. Elman specialised in Neurology with scholarships at Oxford University and posts in London at the Institute of Psychiatry and the National Hospital for Nervous Diseases. After a Rockefeller Fellowship to the Mayo Clinic, he returned to the Radcliffe Infirmary in Oxford where he retired.
