Halo olketa, Yokwe, Kam na mauri, Bula vinaka, Faiakse'ea, Talofa, Taloha ni, Malo e lelei, Fakaalofa lahi atu, Kia orana, Aloha, Ia orana, Tēnā koutou katoa! Welcome to Te Tumu: School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies.

Carving of Tane-mahutaSince it's inception in 1990, Te Tumu has rapidly gained an international reputation as one of the preferred places in New Zealand to learn about Māori, Pacific and Indigenous languages, cultures and societies.

Our multi-cultural and multi-disciplinary staff, students, research and teaching is reflected in our name Te Tumu, a pan-Polynesian term which is often used in Māori in the phrase te tumu herenga waka - a post for tying up canoes. We liken ourselves as a foundation which staff, students and guests can anchor themselves to for the duration of their stay at the University of Otago.

We hope that you, like many others who have also done, choose Te Tumu as a place to become critically aware of the world around you and gain the skills to actively participate in that world.

Originally established as a Department of Māori Studies, Te Tumu has undergone several transformations to become a School of Māori, Pacific and Indigenous Studies. We have now expanded our undergraduate offerings to include Māori Studies, Pacific Islands Studies and Indigenous Development. Our postgraduate offerings are now enriched by the addition of both Masters and Doctoral program options in Peace and Conflict Studies.
