Research

Paula is a vocationally registered public health medicine specialist (FNZCPHM) and Kaupapa Māori mixed-methods researcher (epidemiology, qualitative including participatory creative methods, ethical co-designing). She holds a Research Associate Professor role at Te Rōpū Rangahau Hauora a Eru Pōmare, Department of Public Health (University of Otago, Wellington) and an Honorary Adjunct Associate Professor role at the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education, Australia.

Paula’s research involves upholding tāngata whenua rights to health and wellbeing and is situated at the intersection of racism, ableism / disablism, state care, youth justice residences / prisons, and Māori health and health equity. Her approach is informed by Indigenous ways of being, knowing, relating, and doing, and centres Indigenous world-perspectives and lived experiential realities, acknowledging the fluid ways in which Indigenous Peoples seek and construct knowledge.
