Te Tūhauora: Māori Health (GENA 704)
Our changing primary care sector presents an opportunity for approaches grounded in equity, Tikanga Māori and Te Tiriti o Waitangi. Strengthen your knowledge of the broader context of Indigenous health, priorities for Māori health in Aotearoa, and ways that this knowledge may be applied in policy and in your own practice. Topics include:
• Recognition of the diversity of Māori and an understanding of issues surrounding the measurement of Māori ethnicity.
• A familiarity with Māori health status and priorities.
• An awareness of issues of service responsiveness to Māori.
• Knowledge of Māori health initiatives, models for delivery, and resources available to primary health professionals.
Please note that Te Tūhauora: Māori Health can be taken as a single paper or as part of a full postgraduate qualification.

Elective paper for the Postgraduate Diploma in Primary Health Care
Material is presented in self-directed learning modules covering the following topics:
- An awareness of the contexts of Māori health
- Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its relationship to Māori health
- An awareness of the broader issues of indigenous health
- A recognition of the diversity of Māori and an understanding of issues surrounding the measurement of Māori ethnicity
- A familiarity with Māori health status and priorities
- An awareness of issues of service responsiveness to Māori
- A knowledge of Māori health initiatives, models for delivery and resources available to primary health professionals
- Teaching Arrangements
This Distance Learning paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.
The in-person component is a compulsory workshop period.
Other teaching is via Blackboard and Zoom videoconferencing.
Study skills, resources and technology support are provided to students at no-charge via a specifically developed site that is accessed through Blackboard.
