The New Zealand Law Foundation Centre for Law and Policy in Emerging Technologies is the only New Zealand-based research centre that examines the legal, ethical and policy issues around new technologies. These include biotechnology, nanotechnology, neurotechnologies and the internet.
The position of Centre director was established under the University of Otago’s Leading Thinkers Initiative, supported by an endowment from the New Zealand Law Foundation (NZLF).
The Foundation’s vision for the Centre’s work – led by Director Associate Professor Colin Gavaghan – is to encourage the formulation of a framework for the systematic and comprehensive evaluation of emerging technologies, and to build New Zealand’s legal and policy capability in these developing areas.
