Shaping the legal landscape of tomorrow

The NZLF Centre for Law and Policy in Emerging Technologies is a pioneering research hub dedicated to exploring the legal, ethical, and societal implications of rapidly evolving technologies. We are committed to ensuring that Aotearoa New Zealand is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.

Our mission

We conduct forward-thinking legal research that anticipates the impact of emerging technologies on society. Our work informs policy, guides regulation, and fosters public understanding in areas where innovation intersects with law and ethics.

We identify and investigate new and emerging technologies that may disrupt society, provoke ethical debates, or challenge existing legal frameworks. Our goal is to stay ahead of the curve—before the future arrives.

Building on a strong foundation

The Centre builds on the legacy of the Law Foundation-sponsored Human Genome Research Project, expanding its scope to address the legal implications of a broader set of emerging technologies.

About the University of Otago Human Genome Research Project

The Centre’s research agenda extends beyond genomics to encompass a wide array of transformative technologies, including:

  • Nanotechnology
  • Alternative bioenergy
  • Robotics
  • Artificial intelligence and cognitive science

The position of Centre director (the Chair of Law and Emerging Technology) was established under the University of Otago's Leading Thinkers Initiative, supported by an endowment from the New Zealand Law Foundation (NZLF).
