For more than 50 years our researchers have quietly made incredible discoveries that have changed clinical practice and provided economic opportunities for Christchurch and Aotearoa New Zealand.
UOC’s research teams include scientists, health professionals and trainees – a unique community made possible through our co-location with Christchurch Hospital. These strong clinical connections set our campus apart, allowing us to develop local solutions through clinically informed research.
The University of Otago’s commitment to Christchurch continues with our new build – Wai-Ora – the most ambitious project in the University’s history.
In 2026, more than 300 of our health researchers and educators will shift into this iconic space in Te Papa Hauora – the Health Precinct - where they will continue to shape health outcomes in Christchurch, Canterbury, Aotearoa New Zealand and the world.
However, research grants are depleting in value and quantity, leading to loss of research expertise and capability. We need new ways to retain a vibrant research community in Christchurch.
