Changes to science masters’ degrees from 2027

From 2027, our science masters' degrees are changing. The Master of Science (MSc) and Master of Applied Science (MAppSc) will be renamed to the Master of Science (Thesis) and Master of Science (Applied). A new degree, the Master of Science (Coursework), will also be introduced.

The currently-named MSc and MAppSc will have one final semester 2 intake (starting July 2026). Application closes 15 June 2026 for domestic students (the international student application deadline has now passed for the July 2026 intake).

Domestic and international students intending to begin study in 2027 should apply for the Master of Science (Thesis), Master of Science (Applied), or Master of Science (Coursework).

    Why study Environmental Management?

If you want to understand how human activity shapes the environment, and how to guide that relationship for a better future, Environmental Management gives you the tools to act.

The environmental issues facing our planet demand clear thinking and skilled collaboration. Postgraduate study in this field takes you beyond describing problems to designing solutions. You’ll explore natural systems, policy frameworks, Indigenous thinking, and planning tools that influence change at local and global scales.

    Career opportunities

A postgraduate qualification in Environmental Management prepares you to influence how environmental decisions are made and acted on. You’ll be equipped for roles that bridge science, policy, and community.

    Possible pathways include:

    • Environmental consultant in the public or private sector
    • Policy adviser for regional or national government
    • Sustainability manager in business or industry
    • Researcher or analyst in environmental monitoring
    • Community or iwi-led environmental project co-ordinator

What it’s like to study at this level

Your learning will blend research, coursework, and collaboration with experienced environmental professionals.

You’ll engage in seminars, fieldwork, and project-based study that connect theory with practice. Advanced papers explore impact assessment, sustainability, and the evolving frameworks of environmental management. Depending on your chosen qualification, you might complete a thesis or a combination of coursework and research.

Work alongside peers from science, geography, and social science backgrounds, reflecting the interdisciplinary nature of the field. Together, you’ll explore how to balance environmental goals with social, cultural, and economic realities.

This is for you if ...

A background in science, geography, or planning is helpful, along with skills in research, analysis, or environmental policy.
