Born and educated in Scotland, James has nearly 30 years' experience in hospitality and institutional management within the New Zealand tertiary education sector.
James is a passionate advocate for the collegiate life here at the University of Otago.
As Director of Campus and Collegiate Life Services ( CaCLS ), James is accountable for leading the University's extensive accommodation portfolio, which includes all the university owned and operated colleges, University Flats and the Student Accommodation Centre. James also leads the busy University Union, Staff Club and Uniprint.
His portfolio also includes directing the University's non-core commercial operations including University Print, the Executive Residence, University Staff Club, and the University Union services, campus retail outlets, food and beverage outlets, conference and events, and hospitality services on campus.
James is responsible for assessing and developing commercial opportunities and strengthening commercial performance through the development of strategic business planning processes. James leads the delivery of the University's Collegiate and Campus life, and non-core commercial services strategy, and contributes to and maintains oversight of, the implementation and relevance of this strategy across the University.
He is a New Zealand Justice of the Peace, outdoor recreation enthusiast and a lifestyle block owner. Until he was 11 he thought his home football team was called 'Ayr United Nil' then they scored a goal.

Sean McCallaghan – Senior Warden of Colleges
Sean brings over 20 years of experience in student life, residential management, and tertiary education leadership across South Africa and New Zealand.
As Senior Warden within Campus and Collegiate Life Services, Sean leads a team of wardens responsible for pastoral care, accommodation, and community development across the University's collegiate system. His work supports the University's Vision 2040 and Pae Tata goals and ensures compliance with the Education (Pastoral Care of Tertiary and International Learners) Code of Practice 2021. He previously served as Warden of the University of Otago Flats and, prior to joining Otago, as Director of Student Life at one of North-West University's campuses in South Africa.
Sean holds a PhD in Business Administration and is currently completing a Doctorate in Business Leadership, alongside an MBA and professional certifications in leadership, risk management, and governance. His research focuses on diversity climate, inclusive leadership, and student wellbeing in university settings, with recent publications in the Interdisciplinary Journal of Management Sciences (2025) and the Journal of Social Science Studies (2024), and presentations at several international academic conferences.
Outside of work, Sean enjoys mountain biking, golf, and keeping fit.
Stephen Baughan – General Manager, University of Otago Union
Stephen worked in several Hospitality Management positions before graduating from Otago University with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1993. Stephen joined the University Union in 1995 as the Beverage Manager and was appointed General Manager in 1999.
Stephen is responsible for managing the University's commercial business units including 10 cafes and retail shops, Union Bar, Staff Club, Visitors Centre, Executive Residence Boutique Hotel, Conferences & Events, Marsh Study Centre and catering onsite to 2,550 students residing at 11 Residential Colleges.
Stephen is an avid supporter of Dunedin club rugby, he is Chairman of the Zingari-Richmond Football Club and sits on the Dunedin Club Rugby Council and the Metropolitan Junior Rugby Committee.
Keith Newdick – General Manager, Uniprint
Originally from Wellington, Keith returned to New Zealand in December 2025 after 13 years in Australia, where he most recently held a similar role at the University of Queensland. He brings more than 37 years of experience in print management across manufacturing, trade, corporate service and tertiary education environments.
As General Manager, Keith provides strategic and operational leadership to Uniprint, ensuring the service supports the University of Otago’s teaching, learning, research, and operational needs. Operating within the Campus and Collegiate Life Services Operations Division, he leads Uniprint as a commercially focused unit with a strong service ethos that supports both local business and the University of Otago (staff and students).

Tony joined the University of Otago in 2017. He is the Group Leader – Facilities CaCLS . (Campus and Collegiate Life Services)

Jo Donaldson – Manager Finance, CaCLS (Financial Services)
Jo is a Dunedin local with a career that began in banking and transitioned to the tertiary education sector following her return from her OE .
Jo previously worked at other tertiary institutions and has been at the University of Otago since 2014 working in positions including Accommodation Centre, Colleges and Health Sciences.
She joined the CaCLS Finance Advisory team in 2018.
She works alongside two Finance Associates to support the CaCLS team with their financial reporting requirements.
