Moizle Ocariza imagePhD Student, Translational Biodiscovery Lab

Moizle completed her BSc Hons in Biochemistry at the University of Otago in 2020.

Her project investigated the role of NFxB in the development of ciprofloxacin resistance in Pseudomonas aeruginosa, an opportunistic pathogen. NfxB is a protein that regulates antibiotic-expelling pumps. Moizle then spent the next two years working for a Dunedin-based biotech firm before starting her PhD in 2023.

Moizle’s PhD has three areas of focus. One is looking at the role of carnosine dipeptidase II (CNDP2) in heart disease. CNDP2 is an enzyme that catalyses the formation of Lac-Phe, a metabolite formed from lactate and phenylalanine. She’s also aiming to identify genes that are involved in atrial fibrillation development using RNA sequencing as well as looking at genetic risk scores to see if incorporating genetics can improve risk prediction in patients with heart disease.

For leisure Moizle spends her time running and mountain biking.
