    Overview

    A critical examination of selected principles of management in New Zealand sport development.

    Sport Management is a growing field in Aotearoa/NZ and internationally. This paper addresses some of the pressing global and local topics in non-profit and commercial sport organisations. These include strategic management, the development of lifestyle sports, mega-event legacy, the environmental impact of sport, and diversity and inclusion in sport organisations.

    Learning Outcomes

    On completing the paper students will have had the opportunity to:

    • Examine current research and utilise it to investigate contemporary sport management practices
    • Consider how current social issues such as diversity, modernisation, volunteer retention, and environmental concerns are important to sport managers
    • Develop basic research skills, particularly in literature reviews and using secondary data sources
    • Analyse life and work-based experiences to inform knowledge and challenge taken for granted assumptions about sport management
    Assessment details

    Internal assessment (70%): Fortnightly online reading quizzes, essay, and 2 x tutorial assignments (to be confirmed)

    Final exam (30%).
