Advanced study of two modules (each worth 10 points) from a selection of topics in sport development.
SPEX 461 is designed to provide students with core content inherent in the study of Sport Development at postgraduate level. Students will select from a variety of modules offered by staff on topics related to their area of research expertise.

Graduate Programme Leader for Sport Development and Management Associate Professor Mike Sam
The individual modules will be taught by academic staff from the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science.
- Paper Structure
The paper is modular in nature with students selecting two modules, each worth 10 points, to meet the requirements of the papers. A list of module topics offered each year is available on the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Science website. The specific modules offered may vary year to year, subject to staff availability and student interest.
- Teaching Arrangements
This Distance Learning paper is taught remotely. Distance students in Dunedin are invited to join the class on campus if/when possible.
Each module is taught via lectures, seminars or workshops.
Assessment structure: 100% internally assessed, with each module generally adopting one of two formats:
- Two assessments with a 40/60 split or
- Three assessments using a 25/25/25 split.

A reading list for each module will be provided to students. There will be no textbooks required.

Due to the modular nature of SPEX 461, the specific learning outcomes depend on which modules are selected. For each module offered, specific learning outcomes will be presented in advance to students. In addition, the paper aims to provide students with the following generic learning outcomes dependent on the postgraduate degree in which they are enrolled.
PGDipSci/MSc in Sport, Exercise and Health:
- Investigate topics of interest using current sport-specific international research
- Explain NZ sport management and policy trends in context of global, political and social environment
- Draw from multiple disciplines (e.g. sociology and management) to formulate in-depth analysis of policy and management issues
- Conduct critical examination of policy and management in preparation for research and practitioner careers
- Synthesise advanced-level texts to examine structures and policies in sport
- Communicate effectively using scholarly research writing/presentation styles and techniques
- Challenge and critique existing structures and practices, using both established/traditional and contemporary research
- Identify Māori approaches to policy and management; ability to understand biculturalism and its outcomes
- Understand ethical approaches to working with individuals in community and sport organisations
- Use multiple platforms for presenting work (e.g. blogs); ability to translate research into practical terminology
- Understand, reflect on, and critique current research with a view to developing novel research in the future
- Work in groups in a managed environment to develop group skills
PGDipSpDM/MSpDM:
- Integrate their own work-place knowledge with specialist knowledge drawn from research in sport management/policy
- Appreciate impact of global environment on sport management and policy via case studies
- Identify different disciplinary approaches to understanding organisations; ability to integrate knowledge from other papers and experiences into modules
- Reflect on workplace experience as a function of developing skills for interpreting and developing their work practices and environment
- Engage with advanced-level texts to identify relevant lessons for practical sport development work
- Communicate effectively in organisations; ability to present information orally and written
- Translate research into practical case study and work examples; identify issues with existing practices
- Understand the Treaty of Waitangi in workplace environment and use of Māori understandings of strategic management as navigation
- Understand ethical approaches to working with individuals in community and sport organisations
- Use advanced-level IT systems for presenting and synthesising information; ability to access data bases (e.g. census) to inform current practice
- Understand, reflect on, and critique current practices with a view to identifying research gaps relevant to current employment and practical situations
