Overview

Advanced study of clinical theory and practice in sports physiotherapy. This includes elements of injury mechanisms, principles of injury prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation principles integrated with the clinical reasoning process.

Sports Physiotherapists work with individuals of all ages and abilities to promote health and well-being, encourage physical activity, minimise risk and manage injury, and enhance self-management skills. They use collaborative, person-centered approaches when working with individuals from community to elite sports levels. Sports Physiotherapy graduates are in high demand when selecting professionals for clinical practice in various contexts and with sports teams.

This paper includes principles of the multi-disciplinary team, including presentations and contributions from sports physiotherapists working with community and elite-level teams, sports nutritionists, sports medicine doctors, and a strength and conditioning coach.

Paper Structure

The paper includes webinars and a residential block over three days (Monday to Wednesday afternoon); Blackboard discussions; and written assignments.

  • Training and exercise load management
  • Minimising injury risk
  • Advanced assessment and management of acute and overuse injuries
  • Nutrition for optimal sports performance
  • Psychologically-informed approaches for rehabilitation and return to sports

The Distance Learning offering of this paper is a combination of remote and in-person teaching.

The paper includes one 3-day residential block held in Dunedin and audioconferences held via Zoom.

  • Relating person-centered, biomechanical, neurophysiological and pathoanatomical bases to the assessment and rehabilitation of persons with injuries related to sports, exercise and physical activity
  • Developing and advanced level of evidence-informed knowledge and clinical skills. of current injury risk management and rehabilitation strategies for specific sports codes
  • Demonstrating advanced levels of evidence-informed knowledge and collaborative decision-making skills for prescribing physical activity and exercise for persons of all ages and abilities
  • Discussing the ethical issues relating to role of the sports physiotherapist in the context of a multidisciplinary health and performance team
