Overview

The Faculty of Dentistry is proud of the service we provide to the Dunedin and wider Otago communities, and we appreciate the support we receive.

At the Faculty of Dentistry, you will receive a high standard of care, provided by students working under supervision, or our clinical staff. In either case, you will benefit from the latest evidence-based practice techniques.

The Faculty of Dentistry clinical services is located in a new state-of-the-art Clinical Services Building (CSB) which is accessible through the Walsh Building at 310 Great King Street.

Dental care at the Faculty of Dentistry is offered at reduced rates to our patients, as you are being treated by trainee dentists, dental therapists, and specialists. We appreciate you being part of our students' learning experience. In some instances, your treatment may be provided by one of our specialist clinicians at a higher rate.

Your dental care may also come under specially funded services which are subsidised, however there may be a part-charge that you are required to pay.

COVID-19 is an ongoing problem. Here's what we're doing for your health and ours:

  • If you are unwell, please call us to reschedule your appointment.
  • Masks are required by all patients and visitors at our clinics including in the waiting areas. They are available at our Reception desks.
  • In addition, we require you to please sanitise your hands with the hand sanitiser provided.

How to enrol – Urgent dental need

If you have an urgent dental issue and you are not a patient of the University of Otago Dental Hospital you are required to follow the steps below.

  1. Contact us to outline your dental issue:
    Tel 03 479 8889 (select option 1)
    Email dental.clinicaladministration@otago.ac.nz
You must have an appointment before coming to see us. All patients requiring urgent care need to be assessed first to determine the level of urgency.
  2. Staff will ask you some initial questions over the telephone, and either an appointment will be made, or you will be provided with further information. You will be asked specific information to enable your enrolment onto our patient management system.
  3. When you attend your first appointment, you will be required to complete our enrolment and patient health questionnaire forms. Please arrive 15minutes early to your appointment to allow for time to fill out these forms.

How to enrol – Non-urgent need

Please note that the Faculty of Dentistry does not always accept enrolments for all treatments. The Faculty of Dentistry operates a waitlist system and if you are able to enrol, your treatment may be delayed unless you have an urgent treatment need. It is important that you take steps to manage your oral health and seek treatment when required.
