Research Data Storage

There are a number of potential places to store research data sets at Otago depending the size of the data, levels of security, resilience, and performance required. Options include:

  • The High Capacity Storage (HCS) is very large, has good security and auditibility characteristics, and is resilient to failure as files are replicated across two data centres. Files are not backed up unless you have specifically requested backups.
  • Research Storage is high speed and is the default storage for the onDemand HPC cluster. There are no backups and no replicas.
  • Weka storage is a very high speed, low latency system used as scratch space for cluster jobs with high I/O needs. Access is by request.
  • HCS S3 is a large capacity system with off-campus access through the S3  file transfer protocol.
