Research
Jerram is a Research Fellow in the Social and Behavioural Research Unit, and the HIV Epidemiology Group, both of which sit within the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine.
Jerram is a mixed-methods researcher, with a background is in development geography. He completed an MA exploring the role of sport in development in India, and a PhD examining long-term continuity and change in rural livelihoods in Sierra Leone, West Africa. His MA research included case studies of projects which used cricket to promote awareness of, and reduce stigma around HIV/AIDS in India; while his PhD fieldwork in 2014 coincided with the West African Ebola outbreak, which led to further research assessing the impact of Ebola on rural livelihoods in Sierra Leone. These experiences nurtured an interest in public health research, leading to his current roles.
Jerram's current research is focused on supportive care in cancer, particularly returning to productive endeavours and work following a cancer diagnosis; the challenges, barriers and facilitators associated with the need to travel for cancer treatment and supportive care; and the provision of supportive care services and programmes for cancer survivors post-treatment.
In the HIV Epidemiology Group, his primary role is the analysis and reporting of routinely collected HIV/AIDS data, but he is also involved in other research activities relating to HIV/AIDS in Aotearoa New Zealand
Outside of these two areas, Jerram maintains broad research interests and collaborations, including work in projects on the impact of unmet secondary care need on general practice; health and wellbeing in tourism; men's mental health and spirituality; and tobacco control.
