Our Teacher Education programmes enable you to become a qualified teacher in Early Childhood, Primary, Te Pōkai Mātauranga o te Ao Rua (Primary Bicultural Education) or Secondary Education.
To be sure teaching is the career path for you, it is strongly recommended that intending applicants approach a school or centre, to arrange to spend a day observing a typical day's teaching, prior to submitting your application.
Application dates
Restricted entry applies to these programmes – you must apply, attend an interview, and be offered a place. Applications are to be submitted online.
Apply for the Bachelor of Teaching (BTchg)
- Three-year undergraduate degree
- May be endorsed in:
- Early Childhood Education (Dunedin campus only),
- Primary Education (Dunedin or Invercargill) or
- Te Pōkai Mātauranga o te Ao Rua | Primary Bicultural Education (Invercargill campus only).
Applications open on 1 May.
You must apply for and be offered a place in the programme.
We encourage applications before 31 July.

Apply for the Graduate Diploma of Teaching (GradDipTchg)
- One year graduate qualification
- Online
- Endorsed in Primary Education or Secondary Education
- Designed for applicants already working with a school that supports their participation in the programme, or approved alternative.
Applications open on 1 May.
You must apply for and be offered a place in the programme.
We encourage applications before 31 July.
Applications close 30 November.

- One-year (January–December) postgraduate degree
- Endorsed in Primary Education or Secondary Education
Applications open on 1 May.
You must apply for and be offered a place in the programme.
As places in our programmes are limited, applications received by 31 July will be prioritised, depending on places available.
Applications close on 31 October.
