Inside Life: DNA, proteins and you

What actually happens inside your body when you eat food or exercise? How can scientists change a plant’s colour using DNA? How do we “see” molecules that are far too small to see with our eyes?

In this project, you’ll step into our lab and explore how life works at the molecular level. You’ll work with DNA and proteins - the tiny machines that run every cell - and use the same tools and techniques real scientists use.

During the week you will:

  • Genetically modify plant leaves and watch them change colour
  • Cut, separate, and see DNA and proteins using gels and electricity
  • Measure how exercise and food affect your own body, including blood glucose and lactate levels
  • Design and carry out a small experiment based on a question you are interested in

You don’t need any prior knowledge of biochemistry – just curiosity. If you enjoy biology, chemistry, sport, health, or simply figuring out how things work, this project will give you a genuine taste of university science and biomedical research.

Biochemistry helps scientists improve human health, develop new medicines, create better crops, and understand disease. This project lets you experience it yourself.
