An introduction to ethically responsible leadership with a focus on self-awareness of students' own values, strengths and weaknesses, and on developing skills through practical exercises and a social action project.
Leadership in the sense of 'getting things done through people' requires
all sorts of responsible interpersonal influencing skills. Increasing both personal
effectiveness and team output requires being able to analyse employee or manager behaviour
in order to understand both its person-related determinants (e.g. intelligence or
motivation) and work-situation-related causes (e.g. nature of the team or type of
For that reason, you will investigate two main types of frameworks for studying leadership. In particular you will focus on the difference between 'dimensional' (generalised personal styles) or 'situational' (concrete work) approaches and apply both. For instance in studying leadership as a means for responsible interpersonal influence, you will learn to focus on the leader as a person and on leadership as a process that incorporates both the situation and the followers.
In both cases the key to responsible leadership is decision making: both with respect to what needs to be done (which competencies, which skills) and with respect to how to assess the effectiveness of what will be done (which criterion, for instance human consideration or organisational effectiveness).
The paper has a strong group component, and through this you will definitely get a feel for responsible leadership in teams. As with life and leadership, the paper can be challenging, but you will learn and you will make a positive impact in the local community - and you might even have fun!
