The New Zealand Paediatric Surveillance Unit (NZPSU)

If you are a Paediatrician working in Aotearoa and would like to support our commitment to child health, then please contact us to be added to our monthly surveillance by emailing nzpsu@otago.ac.nz

NZPSU sits within Ōtākou Whakaihu Waka, the University of Otago, which identifies being a Te Tiriti o Waitangi-led university as a strategic priority. NZPSU is committed to processes and practices that uphold and promote equity outcomes for tamariki Māori. We very much wish to reflect an environment in which all individuals are valued and different ways of thinking are embraced, and in which diversity, inclusivity and respect are key components of our overall commitment to excellence.

NZPSU remains a tool for the wider child health community and our partners at the Ministry of Health to not only commit to the eradication of polio but also commit to shining a light on rare and important conditions that affect tamariki and rangatahi in Aotearoa.

NZPSU:

  • Operates a system for the monitoring of acute flaccid paralysis, as part of the global certification of eradication of poliomylelitis, required for WHO
  • Facilitates national surveillance to improve the knowledge of a number of uncommon high-impact childhood conditions in New Zealand
