Overview
Study at doctoral level usually involves a minimum of three years' full-time study, and is by advanced research thesis.
The School's strong research programme is in part evidenced by the growing number of PhD candidates, many of whom are studying with the help of scholarships.
Before you can study at this level you must be appropriately qualified, and usually following on from a research-based honours or master's degree.
You will be expected to be able to develop, in conjunction with your supervisory team, a research thesis that leads to an original and significant contribution to your chosen body of knowledge.

PhD application process
PhD eligibility for entry and for scholarship are guided by the University of Otago Graduate School.
You will be asked to provide the following information:
- Academic transcript (GPA should be in the range of the equivalent of a NZ strong A/ A-, and you should have a high grade in your research work)
- Current Curriculum Vitae
- IELTS results
- A copy of an independent piece of research (i.e. honours or master's dissertation)
