VC Garden Party
Postgraduates mingle with staff in the grounds of Abbey College.

About 200 postgraduate students were warmly welcomed to the University by the Vice -Chancellor, Professor Harlene Hayne, in March.

The annual Garden Party, at postgraduate residential college, Abbey College, is the University's formal welcome event for new postgraduates who have begun their studies in the past year, and was well attended by a range of students and staff.

Prof Hayne told those assembled that postgrads were strongly valued by the University. Speaking from her own experience, Professor Hayne acknowledged that postgrads contribute “energy, enthusiasm and bright new ideas that allow us to move us from project to project year after year”.

Professor Hayne also noted that all of the senior academic staff at Otago, including herself and the two Deputy Vice-Chancellors, continue to conduct research and supervise postgraduate students in addition to their other administrative responsibilities. “This is a clear indication of how much we value postgraduate students.”

“I do hope you know how welcome you are,” she told the students.
