SWCKōrero: The Underestimated Power of Doing Stuff for Free (Tuesday 14 May)

We are delighted to have Sze-En Watts (Manager, Social Impact Studio) as our next guest. Social impact, student leadership, and creativity are on daily rotation at the Social Impact Studio, where Sze-En has enjoyed the last 11 years helping to connect the University with the wider Ōtepoti Dunedin community.

Sze-En's volunteer history started with chasing cane toads and small mammals in outback Australia to living in a remote mountain village in China as a Panda Habitat Conservation Officer. She completed a Masters in Tourism at the University of Otago, focusing on volunteer tourism. After a brief stint in the youth travel industry, Sze-En jumped at the chance to establish the University Volunteer Centre, now called the Social Impact Studio and doing great things for the University and our community.

Working across students, staff, community organisations, funders, and local government, join us to hear how Sze-En brings people and resources together to realise the power of people doing stuff for free and the positive impact it has on the community, the environment and our individual and collective wellbeing!

Past events

24 April - Medieval women: surprisingly human

Women in medieval literature might be assumed to be figures of silence, obedience, good breeding and manners. The women in Geoffrey Chaucer’s poetry, however, show a great deal more complexity and humanity than is popularly ascribed to medieval women including characteristics of: anger, humour, intelligence, slyness, rashness, prudence and physical strength, among other things.

Professor Simone Marshall (Head, School of Arts) examined a selection of Chaucer’s women to show the wide range of humanity exhibited in their personalities, and why Chaucer appears to show such an interest in women.

11 April - Celebrating Women in Tertiary Education

In conjunction with the Tertiary Education Union ( TEU ) we welcomed the TEU ’s Te Pou Whirinaki / National Women’s Officer, Bronwyn Larkins, to Ōtepoti Dunedin.
