Any user data stored on central file servers for 24 hours is recoverable for a period of one month (minimum).

Any user data stored on central file servers on the last Friday of the month is recoverable for a period of 1 year (minimum).

Any user data stored on central file servers on the last Friday of the year is recoverable for a period of 7 years (minimum).

The central file servers contain your home and group shares (H, G, I, J, etc drives).

All critical servers are replicated to off site University disks on a nightly basis and stored for three days. This provides a more complete snapshot of existing data and provides ready retrieval of data in case of a disaster scenario.

Email backups are generally made on the central ITS Exchange Server. Please refer to ITS for an updated description of their backup and retention schedule. It is highly recommended for all staff to use the current email service from ITS. Please log a job with the Service Desk if you are not using this Exchange server as your email service. As of April 2010, a maximum 5 GB of email data can be stored on the ITS Exchange server. Email Archives can be stored on the UOW file servers if space allows.

For further information on UOW backup services and shares, please send an email to ts-staff.uow@otago.ac.nz
