Background and Interests

Jonathan Kennedy imageDr Jonathan Kennedy is a general practitioner in Newtown, Wellington, and an academic lecturer in the Department of Primary Health Care (Wellington).

He has a special interest in the primary health care needs of refugee and migrant arrivals to New Zealand. This dates back to field experience with the medical charity Médecins Sans Frontières, in South Sudan and Sri Lanka and to previous medical experience in Solomon Islands. He graduated with an MBChB (Otago) in 1997 and subsequently completed postgraduate diplomas in Obstetrics, Paediatrics and Public Health. He has been a fellow of the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners since 2007. Jonathan is also the Postgraduate Primary Health Care Lead within the Department of Primary Health Care & General Practice.

Teaching Activities

Jonathan has enjoyed clinical teaching for University of Otago students through his working career, and has been tutoring medical students at the University of Otago Wellington since 2008. He co-convenes the MBChB 4th-year Primary Health Care & General Practice module and teaches across the undergraduate curriculum. He is co-convenor of the biennial distance-taught postgraduate paper: GENA720 Refugee and Migrant Health.

Research Activities

Jonathan has research interests focussed at the interface between primary health care and public health, and on refugee and migrant primary health care. He is involved in a range of research projects based in the Department of Primary Health Care (Wellington), and in collaboration with other departments and institutions.
