I am an ecologist focused on questions that support environmental and community wellbeing. My work is grounded in collaboration with local communities, ensuring research reflects their needs and remains accountable to them. I use a range of approaches, including freshwater ecology, population genomics, field and experimental methods, species distribution modelling, heavy metal analysis, parasites, and stable isotope ecology, and I am passionate about communicating science to land managers and the public.
I am currently working on ecological projects with hapori Māori and other communities. My work includes research with my hapū, Ngaati Mahuta ki te Hauaauru, on tuna and lake health in Tahaaroa Lakes (near Kāwhia), and studies on the impacts of marine heatwaves on kaimoana with rūnaka and community fisheries groups.
I completed my PhD at the University of British Columbia on amphibian ecology and genetics in Haida Gwaii, working with the Council of the Haida Nation and local partners, and co-developing a community monitoring project.
I grew up in Te Tai Poutini (West Coast of the South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand) surrounded by dense native bush, on the edge of a cliff overlooking the Tasman Sea. I love getting out in nature – whether that’s tramping, surfing, climbing or camping.
