Neurosurgery is one of nine sections in the Department of Surgery and Critical Care (Dunedin) at the Faculty of Medicine.
Our neurosurgeons collaborate with other researchers worldwide, via the Brai3n network.

Current studies
Brain stimulation for lower back pain
Adults (18-75) years with chronic low back pain (≥ 6 months) are invited to participate in a research project exploring the effect of brain stimulation on pain and function.
Volunteers will need to be available to attend the following study phases at Dunedin Hospital:
- Baseline assessment: Single session (˜2 hours) - Record brain activity using an electrode cap [electroencephalography (EEG)], carry out pain and movement tests, and complete questionnaires.
- Treatment phase: Consisting of 12 sessions of non-invasive brain stimulation or No brain stimulation (˜1 hour per session, three times a week, for 4 consecutive weeks). Participants have 50% chance of receiving brain stimulation.
- Post-treatment interview: Single session (˜1 hour) interview session about study procedures.
- Follow-up assessments: Three sessions (˜2 hours each) - Repeat baseline assessments at 1-month, 3-months, and 6-months post-treatment phase.
Participants will receive petrol or grocery vouchers as a reimbursement for travel-parking expenses, and a koha.

Transcranial photobiomodulation for chronic fatigue
Adults (18-70 years) diagnosed with chronic fatigue (daily for ≥6 months) are invited to participate in a research project exploring the effect of Photobiomodulation treatment, a form of light therapy.
We require volunteers to be available to attend the following study phases at Dunedin Hospital:
- Baseline assessments: Single session (˜2 hours) - Record brain activity using an electrode cap [electroencephalography (EEG)] and complete questionnaires.
- Treatment phase: Consisting of 15 sessions of Photobiomodulation (˜45 minutes per session, five times a week, for 3 consecutive weeks).
- Follow-up assessments: Two sessions (˜2 hours) - Repeat baseline assessments at 1-week and 1-month post-treatment phase.
Particiants will receive vouchers as a reimbursement for travel/parking expenses.
