The Human Genome Research Project ran from 2004 to 2008. It considered the legal implications and policy options relevant to human genome-based technologies. The project's aim was to set out options and choices for New Zealand in response to opportunities and challenges that have arisen since the completion of the human genome mapping project.

Led by the University of Otago's Faculty of Law and funded by the New Zealand Law Foundation, the project involved the University's Bioethics Centre and was supported by a team of New Zealand and international researchers in law, bioethics, science, Māori and paediatrics.

Following the publication of the project's final report, in August 2008, ongoing research in this area is now being undertaken by the New Zealand Law Foundation (NZLF) Centre for Law and Policy in Emerging Technologies.
