Welcome to the Otago Energy Research Centre

The Otago Energy Research Centre links a diverse spectrum of researchers who share a common goal of assisting the transformation of New Zealand’s energy system to one which is efficient, secure, sustainable, and carbon neutral. Collectively, we seek to understand the interactions between energy supply, energy use, human behaviour, social processes and economic forces, and use this understanding to create a path to resilient communities in harmony with our physical environment.

Some Challenges of a Low Carbon Society

Moving towards a sustainable society is the challenge for the 21st century.  Maintaining a balance between improvement in social well being, economic well being and environmental well being is extraordinarily difficult. This nexus of challenge is focused around the issue of carbon emissions and especially energy use. This talk will cover the reasons why our society needs to evolve and what the implications will be. Two case studies will help tease out the challenges and opportunities - transport and the island nation of the Maldives. The talk highlights the interlocking nature of  social, technical and economic issues, which need to be addressed in concert  if we are to rise up to the challenge.
