Zoology is the study of animals, their behaviour, their physiology and evolution, as well as their interactions with each other and with their environment. Zoologists study how animals evolved and the impact of environmental change on their survival. They also study costs and benefits of conservation and ways to enhance species survival.
The Department of Zoology has an international reputation for research in freshwater ecology, wildlife and conservation biology, neurobiology and animal behaviour, parasitology, genetics, environmental physiology and evolutionary studies. Read more...

Congratulations to:
- Phil Seddon and Tim Molteno (Physics) were successful in obtaining a 3-year FRST grant of just over $1 miillion for the development and application of new generation GPS tags for post-release monitoring of NZ bird restorations.
- At the annual meeting of the Royal Society of New Zealand Hamish Spencer was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. Congratulations Hamish on this well-deserved honour.
- Graham Wallis and Henrik Moller who have been promoted to
full professorships! Awesome news - well done!
- Michel Ohmer has been awarded the Marion Fyfe Prize in Zoology for
the female student who attained the highest level of achievement in
Zoology at 400-level.
- Andy Hutcheon has been awarded the HOD prize for top male student who
attained the highest level of achievement in Zoology or Wildlife
Management at 400-level.
- Kate Beer has been awarded the prize for top student in Wildlife
Management class of 2009.
- Anna Ashcroft & Amanda Chamberlain were both nominated by the Dept.
of Zoology for the Otago Institute Prize, for top Science student
completing their BSc degree which includes a significant research
component.
- Andy Hicks for winning the Department of
Conservation prize for best applied science presentation at the
combined annual conference of the New Zealand Freshwater Sciences
Society and New Zealand Hydrological Society.
- Kelly Hare, who has been chosen by her students as being
one of OUSA's Top Ten Supervisors of the Year!
- Jen Germano who not only handed in her PhD but has also won the 3 minute thesis competition - AWESOME STUFF! Congrats also Catherine Grueber who also gave a fantastic talk and won a $500 prize for her efforts! GO THE ZOO GIRLS!
- Cynthia Winkworth was successful with her application to the Maurice and Phyllis Paykel Trust to "Assess the public health risks of antibiotic resistant microbes in freshwater environments". The project has been fully funded at $20K for one year.
- David Winter won the best student presentation at the Genetics Convention Otago Symposium
Otakou Marae Experience
Staff and students stayed overnight on the Otakou Marae. They found this to be a very rewarding experience and appreciated that it was an an opportunity that many international students and New Zealanders don't get very often. Read more...
