Concordance files

Using the GCH to undertake health data analysis.

Our long-term aim is the comprehensive and accurate understanding of urban: rural variation in health outcomes and healthcare utilization at both national and regional levels. This is best achieved by the widespread uptake of the GCH by health researchers and health policymakers.

The GCH is straightforward to use and most users will only need the relevant concordance file.

Statistical Area 1s (SA1s, small statistical areas which are the output geography for population data) were used as the building blocks for the GCH and are the preferred small areas when undertaking the analysis of health data using the GCH. It is however appreciated that a lot of health data is not available at the SA1level and GCH concordance files are also available for Domicile (Census Area Units, CAU) and Statistical Area 2s (SA2) and Meshblock. The concordance files are in Excel format.

GCH address finder

The Geographic Classification for Health Address Tool

The GCH address finder was developed by Rory Miller, Centre for Rural Health, and funded by Hauora Taiwhenua Rural Health Network.

The GCH address finder allows users to identify the GCH of the small area (SA1) in which an address is located. There is the option of using GCH23 or the older GCH18. GCH23 should be the default version unless the addresses are being geocoded as part of a historical data set, 2022 or earlier. Additional information is also provided, including the NZDep decile of the SA1, the meshblock, SA2 (number and name) and Territorial area.

An additional batch processing option is available for csv files of up to 200 addresses. Further information on the Batch processing option on the app.

Contact the team for additional information or to obtain help processing files in excess of 200 addresses.
