The Big Data and Better Ageing Research Group investigates the complex interplay between ageing, health trajectories, and service delivery. We use large‑scale health and social datasets to illuminate patterns of frailty, multimorbidity, functional decline, and care needs across the lifespan.

Our work focuses on identifying early indicators of risk, modelling long‑term outcomes, and understanding system‑level factors that shape the wellbeing of older adults. A unifying theme across our research is the pursuit of data‑driven insights that support equitable, person‑centred care for ageing populations.

Our Group Vision (5–10-year horizon)

We aim to strengthen Aotearoa New Zealand’s ability to respond to the growing pressures of an ageing population by advancing responsible, AI‑enabled use of large‑scale health data. Over the next decade, we will deepen our leadership in data governance and Māori data sovereignty, ensuring emerging technologies are used transparently, ethically, and in ways that support equitable outcomes for older adults.
